I’ll never be a yogini, but…

Yoga. I have mixed feelings about it. See, I understand the physical benefits of it in flexibility and strength, but the whole mind part? Meh, I just don’t dig it. Not only do I not dig it, I find it giggle inducing and it makes it hard to concentrate on the parts I DO dig.

Seeing that I do I understand the physical part, I want to do it on a more regular basis as part of my Weight Wars and have been looking for a video with less of the blahblahblah mind stuff. I’ve asked for recommendations, googled and looked high and low, but I didn’t want to buy anything knowing full well if it wasn’t what I wanted, I couldn’t get my money back.

Then I remembered that I could try it in the privacy of my very own living room for free with OnDemand. (Sometimes, my “bright chickie” status is questionable.) So this morning I was in the mood to do a little Moving and clicked over. There were a lot o choices, but I’ve heard 10lb Slimdown Yoga mentioned a bunch of times and figured if it sucked I could just turn it off.

It was about 25 min long and I took a few breaks into Child’s Pose (which was encouraged) and had to modify a lot, but I did it and I actually kind of liked it. Chris Freytag was clear about the poses and moved slowly enough that I could keep up, but not to slow that I was annoyed by it. She noted modifications as we went, which I appreciated because my upper body strength needs work in certain ways and my flexibility is a shadow of it’s former self, but also encouraged you to push yourself which I need!

I think the thing I liked the best was that she kept saying how it’s not about perfect poses, it’s about progress. I’ll be doing this one again I think. It was almost – gasp – fun!

Do you do yoga? Have you tried this one? What did you think?

I have never tried yoga. I need to lose 20 lbs (30 would be ideal but would take an Act of God) but even 10 would be a huuuuuge improvement. I have OnDemand and I will try this as well.

I read somewhere that for every e lb you lose, you have 4lbs less of pressure on your knees going up stairs so every little bit can help.

Try it out if you hate it, dont do it again!

I love yoga, I feel like a million bucks after (when I go). Personally i find Hot Yoga to be the biggest challenge. I also see the most improvement with my flexibility with it. I think that it would be great for weight loss.

I’ve heard good things about it for weight loss. One woman who used to come to my gym told me that she says to herself in the mirror every day, “Body, you’re strong and capable, but we need to improve XYZ. Let’s use LMO to fix that.” and she lost about 40lbs over the course of a couple years. Not fast, no, but seemed effective. Maybe I’ll give it a whirl and use the flexibility and strength from yoga to fill in those blanks.
